TX LRPT 2006-2020 JOSEPH ALANIZ

Post:

The Texas Long Range Plan for Technology 2006-2020, or the Tx LRPT, mandates technology standards in certain domains. The STaR Chart list the four domains as A. Teaching and Learning, B. Educator Preparation, C. Administration and Support, and D. Infrastructure.

The domains mentioned are mandated by state statues and NCLB. For instance, NCLB and TEA policies mandate that students be technology literate by the end of 8th grade. In addition, NCLB also mandates technology must be integrated across all curriculum areas. In Texas, it is expected and required that all secondary courses have technology objectives and standards. The State Board of Education Commission (SBEC) requires new teachers to have a certain level of technology competences. The current educators are highly encouraged to improve their technology skills and competences.

The one domain that has a more direct impact on my teaching style and classroom management is Educator Preparation and Development. I see this as a way to improve the usage of multimedia and the Internet in the curriculum. The use of technology in the classroom requires a vision, an action plan, and having a set of skills and resources to utilize technology effectively in the classroom. I would remind my colleagues that having a vision of how technology will be implement is a vital part of curriculum planning. The action plan, or the lesson plan, needs to address student IEPs. A good teacher would ask him or herself "what are the expectations for using said technology."

The STaR chart domain: Educator Preparation and Development should have the highest ratings. The school administrators and teacher leaders need to remind faculty and staff to make technology a priority, to use it as a a learning tool and as a communication tool.
